Emergency and Urgent Care Services
What to do in an Emergency
If you are worried about your life or the life of a family member, call 911 right away. This call is free from any phone. If you do not speak English, stay on the phone and an ambulance will be there soon. A fire truck and police car may also come.
Settlement.Org has more information on what you can expect when you call 911.
If you are not worried about your life or the life of a family member, but still need help right away, do not call 911. Drive the person to the nearest hospital or call a taxi.
Hospitals
There are three hospitals in Waterloo Region:
The Region of Waterloo website has information on many other emergency services such as fire, police and more.
Urgent Care Services
If you do not have a healthcare provider or family doctor, you can go to an urgent care medical clinic. They are also called walk-in clinics. These clinics are not for emergencies.
See the list of urgent care clinics and a map of urgent care (walk-in) clinics to find a clinic near you.
Call the clinic to find out what times they are open. You do not need an appointment. Everyone must wait their turn to see a doctor. You may have to wait for several hours. When you get to the clinic, you must check in with the receptionist.
If you have a health problem and do not know where to go, or it is an emergency, call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000. Telehealth is a free service of the Government of Ontario. You can speak to a qualified, registered nurse and get health advice or information. You can call any time of the day or night. The Telehealth service is in English or French with translation for other languages.
