Rights and Responsibilities
Canada and Ontario have consumer protection laws and consumer rights. Laws and rules help consumers (shoppers) know what they can expect from merchants (stores). For example, advertising must be accurate, merchants (stores) must honour contracts and warranties, and consumers (shoppers) should only pay for the services they asked for and were given.
Consumers also have a number of responsibilities they include:
- Learning about the product or service you are buying so you can make a smart choice
- Being fair when there is a problem
- Protecting personal information
