I came to Waterloo Region on July 17, 2006 to join my husband. He had come to Waterloo Region because a friend helped him settle here.
I have found Waterloo Region to be peaceful and particularly good for children. In the beginning I was little scared about how we could be able to settle here, but lately I found it less challenging because of a supporting environment.
I think it is not easy for immigrant professionals to get even entry level jobs in their field. Employment and studying are the most challenging tasks.
For university admissions, universities have certain requirements such as TOEFL and IELTS scores. They can be a huge barrier for immigrants. Secondly, candidates have to provide transcripts and academic reference letters that can also limit the opportunities for immigrants.
I have submitted my application for MSW but I need to provide TOEFL scores and need to complete a few prerequisites to be accepted. It is frustrating, but I know I have to do it.
My employment and education experience has been great. Fortunately, I found some supportive people from my country of origin and also received local agency’s support to get employment in my field. It took me one year to get employment in my field. However, I think compared to some other immigrant professionals, I found a job in less time.
Currently, I am working full time as an employment counsellor and anticipate going for further studies within a year. I am hoping to get a Masters degree in social work. I think Waterloo Region is good for further studies as we have two of the best universities in this Region.
Overall, our settlement experience has been great and I think this is the best place to live!
