Learn English and Other Lanaguages

English and French are the official languages of Canada.  In Waterloo Region, while English is the most commonly used language, being able to speak multiple languages enriches our lives and the community as a whole.  It also makes our businesses more competitive in a global economy. 

International language classes teach a language other than English or French. These courses teach students a language and information about other cultures.

Learn English

Being able to speak and write English well will help you become familiar with Waterloo Region, find a job, and get settled here.  Reading and writing in English is an essential skill.  See the Human Resources and Social Development Canada website for more information about the essential skills that help people participate fully in the workplace and in the community.

English language training courses teach you how to read, write, listen to, and speak English.  Courses in Waterloo Region include information to help you settle here.  You will also meet other newcomers who are learning English.

Assessing your English language skills

It is best to assess your English skills as soon as you decide to move to Canada. 

 

If you are a student, planning to attend a Canadian University where teaching is in English, you will need to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the IELTS, or another test that is accepted by the university of your choice. 

If an employer or organization requires a language assessment, check with them to find out what they need.

Translation/Interpretation Services

If you are unable to speak or understand spoken English interpreters can speak for you over the phone or in a meeting.  Translators help you to write or understand a document written in English. 

 

 

Learn French

Check with the French public school board and Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud to learn about French language courses.
