Canadian Experience and Networks

Canadian experience and networking can help you get a job.  Most employers will ask about your Canadian experience.  Many employers see Canadian experience as a very important reason to hire or not hire someone.  Internships, volunteering, and temporary employment are ways to get Canadian experience.

Internships

Internships are temporary positions offering “on-the-job” training. Internships may be paid, unpaid, or partly paid.

  • Waterloo Region Immigrant Employment Network has an internship program for internationally trained professionals.
  • Career Bridge sets up interviews for internationally qualified professionals looking to gain Canadian experience.
  • Many schools offer internships to their students. Check with the university or college you are attending to see if internships are offered to students in your area of study.

Volunteering

A volunteer is someone who gives time, effort and skill to a need or cause without pay.  If you are a web developer, you might offer to develop or redesign websites for charities.  Volunteering is a great way to network and gain Canadian experience. Learn more about volunteering and community involvement.

Temporary Employment Agencies

A temporary (“temp”) or placement agency finds and maintains workers. The agency works with other companies needing a short-term worker by sending them a temporary worker.  Some temp agencies don’t let companies hire their temporary workers for one year after the placement.

Networking and Mentors

Networking and mentors can also help you get a job.  Try building a network of people who have similar jobs and interests, or work in the area in which you want to work.  Sometimes employers will ask others if they know anyone who is right for a job, rather than putting the job in the newspaper or online job banks.  This way of hiring is called the hidden job market.  You can network through industry and professional associations.
